Bandshell
The bandshell structure had to be instantly recognizable as a performance venue. At the same time, it needed to address the high winds of tornadoes, be open enough to prevent nesting birds, and avoid interfering with electronic amplification. This made for a solution that is more a backdrop than a shell, and one that works as a shade structure by day and a light fixture by night.
Structure and Form
The form is manifest by arraying an adaptable frame that changes as a function of its position in the array. Using parametric technology, equations were built into the frame that enabled the overall form to be rapidly regenerated, thus making it very quick to generate design alternatives until a satisfactory shape was arrived at. The precise spatial location of all connections and the dimensions of the connecting members between them could be output in tabular format to the engineer to create a structural analytical model, and to a rollercoaster manufacturer, the final fabricator for their fabrication model. The bandshell is complex 3D sculptural and monumental form which had to be publically bid and built economically.
