Alessi, was founded in 1921, Carlo Alessi was the chief designer of the company from 1935 until the early 80s. He took over the company from his father, Giovanni, after having worked in his metal workshop. Carlo designed many of the notable Alessi pieces, including the “Bombe” and “Ottagonale” series. Gensler was recently given the opportunity to reimagine these two lines within certain constraints. Avoiding retooling the production of the underlying forms, we focused on surface treatments of the metal. Numerous ideas led to a preferred concept of etching an abstracted map of Rome on the predominantly flat surfaces of the try and the lids as seen in the final image below.
